Smart Borders refers to an approach to border management that is Secure, Measurable, Automated, Risk management-based and Technology-driven.
Promoted by the World Customs Organisation (WCO) as an international best practice since 2019, Smart Borders aim to facilitate the movement of goods, people, and vehicles. This is achieved by shifting many border procedures away from the physical border using pre-arrival data, automated risk assessment, and post-clearance controls.
This approach helps to reduce delays, improve compliance, and enhance border security, while supporting faster and more efficient trade flows.
