Import declaration
An Import Declaration is a formal submission made to customs authorities providing details about goods being brought into a country. It is used to declare the nature, value, origin, and classification of the goods so that the correct duties, VAT, and any restrictions or controls can be applied.
The declaration typically includes information such as the commodity code, customs value, country of origin, consignor and consignee details, and the relevant customs procedure being used.
Import declarations are usually submitted electronically via systems such as CDS (Customs Declaration Service) in the UK. Once accepted, the declaration allows customs to assess any charges due and determine whether the goods can be released or require further checks.
Accurate and complete import declarations are essential to ensure compliance with customs regulations and to avoid delays, penalties, or additional checks.
