EORI (UK) Hosts Ground-breaking Reception for Trade Facilitation Commission Launch

London, January 2024 – In a landmark event held at the House of Commons, EORI (UK) celebrated International Customs Day with the official launch of the Trade Facilitation Commission, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of global trade practices. The event, attended by industry experts, government officials, and trade facilitators, set the stage for a transformative approach to customs procedures and international trade.

Lord Theodore Agnew and renowned trade expert Shanker Singham were among the distinguished speakers who emphasized the critical role of innovation and collaboration in revamping customs and trade processes. Their insights underscored the Commission's commitment to making international trade more accessible and efficient, benefiting businesses and economies around the globe.

"The Trade Facilitation Commission is poised to redefine the landscape of global trade by simplifying and accelerating the movement of goods across borders," stated Lord Agnew. "Our goal is to enhance the UK's position in the global economy by facilitating trade that is both efficient and inclusive,"

Robert Hardy, representing EORI (UK), expressed gratitude towards the attendees and highlighted the vital role of traders in achieving the UK's global trade aspirations. "There is no trade without traders, and the Commission recognises the pivotal role they play. With the support of key industry figures, we are looking to challenge policies that are cumbersome and to increase trade openness to support traders and the UK economy as a whole." said Hardy.

The Trade Facilitation Commission's launch is a response to the pressing challenges facing international trade, aiming to bridge the gap between policy and practice. By fostering an environment of openness and collaboration, the Commission seeks to support traders and bolster the UK economy.

In light of the UK's departure from the EU customs territory, we recognised the necessity for revised customs procedures where previously there were none. Initially projected at approximately two hundred million declarations annually, this estimate has now stabilised at less than one hundred million, yet remains a significant figure.

Our team at EORI plays a pivotal role in orchestrating approvals and furnishing round-the-clock customs assistance to ensure a seamless progression of the entire process. From the outset, we held the stance that Brexit couldn't be synonymous with "business as usual." The clearance of a truck from Lille should not be subject to the same protocol as a 40ft container journeying from Shanghai.

Our very own Rob Hardy, elucidated:

"Trade within the EU thrives on repetition and rapid movement, demanding an optimized strategy that minimizes hindrances to the free flow of goods and avoids disruptions from customs formalities."

With the endorsement from HMRC for aggregation, our innovative CABIE solution alleviates border complexities and subsequent documentation burden, seamlessly releasing imported consignments in just over a minute.

Rob Hardy went on to emphasize:

"Imagine you have ten containers destined for the same recipient on a single vessel—our system empowers agents to submit a solitary import declaration. This level of efficiency is rarely feasible for RORO (roll-on/roll-off) truck traffic, where typically ten individual entries are required. This is where EORI diverges from the norm."

"Uploading documents and authorising import consignments now takes mere minutes and is often more cost-effective. We're striving to shift from quoting declaration fees to linking costs with shipment quantities—a transformation that CABIE has enabled us to implement."

EORI primarily leverages customs simplifications for import clearances, irrespective of whether the arrival port employs GVMS (Good Vehicle Movement Service) or inventory-linked mechanisms. By embracing these streamlined procedures, the customs formalities can be decoupled from the movement of goods, allowing for post-delivery completion. Furthermore, repetitive trade streams can be consolidated under a single import declaration, spanning a span of up to ten days of shipments.
