What is CITES?
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), is an international agreement between governments that aims to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants doesn’t threaten their survival.
If a species is listed under CITES, traders must obtain the appropriate permits or certificates before moving them across international borders. CITES is legally binding and enforced through national legislation. In the UK, CITES controls are implemented and overseen by DEFRA and Border Force, failure to comply can result in seizures, fines or prosecution.
