What is a Commodity Code?
A commodity code is a numeric classification used to identify goods when importing or exporting. It determines the customs duty, VAT rates and import/export restrictions that apply to a product.
Commodity codes are part of the Harmonised System (HS), a globally standardised 6-digit structure used in international trade. Countries then add additional digits to provide further detail and apply national rules. In the UK and EU 10-digit codes are required for imports and 8-digit codes are used for exports.
